Summary

Henderson Middle School is a public middle school located in Chamblee, Georgia, serving 1,391 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 131 out of 206 school districts in Georgia and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Henderson Middle School has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past several years, dropping from a high of 126 out of 537 Georgia middle schools in 2014-2015 to its current ranking of 335 out of 584 in 2024-2025. The school's academic performance is mixed, with strong proficiency rates in Algebra I and English Language Arts, but weaker results in Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Despite higher per-student spending compared to the state average, the school's overall performance still lags behind higher-performing nearby schools like Chamblee Middle School and Kittredge Magnet School.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Henderson Middle School (over 55%) suggests a relatively disadvantaged student population, which may contribute to the school's academic challenges. In contrast, Kittredge Magnet School, a public magnet school in the same district, has a much lower free and reduced-price lunch rate of only 8.17%, indicating a more affluent student population. Addressing these areas of concern and learning from the practices of the top-performing schools in the region could be key to improving Henderson Middle School's outcomes.

Open Quote This 1st year for my 8th grader has not gone well. Teachers have repeatedly asked students to stay home from COVID after opening doors for face to face instruction. I’m very happy to be done here and for her to be going on to HS. Definitely would have bypassed HMS for another school had I known the levels of apathy at teacher level. Close Quote

Open Quote I really hated this middle School, one of the teachers goes to church and showed people a racist symbol on her forehead. She was also the Art teacher at the time I was in School back in 2007 or something of that nature. The Teachers there are Ignorant people that usually bullies other Teachers for the matter of Ethnic Values. They forced me to go to a Psychiatrist or these teachers have Threaten to Suspend me. I get it it’s. Public School but we have our concerns when it comes to certain issues. Students beat up students like is an Everyday thing. It’s like there no Authority but only hatred and ignorance around the School Campus. I regret going to this middle School and the students there are very very Discriminatory because I am Atheist. So, really I got scared because of the Bullies there. This School never changed for the better, it has gotten worse because of lack of fundings. Close Quote

Open Quote School has excellent performance, great musical departments, amazing amounts of clubs and special classes (eg. Creative Writing, Assistant Directors) and core classes are spectacular. Teachers progress at a speed which is both comfortable for the child and fast enough to help them finish their lessons. Dress code is well executed, hardly any behavioral problems. Professional-like school. I highly recommend it. Close Quote
