Briarlake Elementary School

Summary:

Briarlake Elementary School is a public elementary school in Decatur, Georgia, serving 378 students in grades PK-5. The school consistently outperforms the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages in standardized test scores, with strong academic performance across all grade levels and subject areas.

Briarlake Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 45.24% White, 21.43% African American, 18.25% Hispanic, 7.41% Asian, and 7.14% two or more races. This diversity is higher than some nearby schools, such as Sagamore Hills Elementary (47.79% White) and Oak Grove Elementary (60.55% White). Additionally, Briarlake has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 25.93%, compared to schools like Midvale Elementary (54.23%) and McLendon Elementary (100%).

Briarlake Elementary's student-teacher ratio of 10.9 is also favorable, lower than the ratios of some nearby schools, such as Henderson Mill Elementary (13.6). The school's consistent academic performance, diverse student population, and favorable student-teacher ratio suggest that it is providing a high-quality education to its students, challenging the notion that diversity and high performance are mutually exclusive.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
