Summary

Hawthorne Elementary School in Atlanta, GA, serves approximately 378 students in Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the DeKalb County school district, and it has climbed to its best statewide ranking since 2017-2018 — now sitting in the 48th percentile with a 2-star rating.

One of Hawthorne's standout strengths is its 3rd grade math performance. In the most recent school year, 55.5% of 3rd graders scored proficient or above — well ahead of the district average of 35.9% and even surpassing the state average of 48.3%. This is the third consecutive year the school has outperformed its district in 3rd grade math. However, that early advantage fades by 5th grade, where math proficiency drops to 27.1%, below both district and state averages. The school also invests heavily in its students, spending $21,825 per pupil and maintaining a very low student-teacher ratio of 9.4:1 — the lowest among nearby elementary schools like Doraville United Elementary School (14.5:1) and Henderson Mill Elementary School (13.5:1).

Despite serving a student population where 83% qualify for free or reduced lunch — a significant increase from about 60% just two years ago — Hawthorne is achieving better outcomes than many nearby schools with similar demographics. For example, Dresden Elementary School (92.4% poverty) ranks in the 2nd percentile, while Hawthorne sits at the 48th. Still, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism is 24.3%, notably higher than the state average of 17.7% and far above Oak Grove Elementary School's 3.9% rate just 1.86 miles away. The school also shows a significant gender gap — female students rank in the 60th percentile statewide, while male students rank in the 36th — and Hispanic and English Language Learner students score well below state averages. With its improving trajectory and strong early-grade instruction, Hawthorne is a school making progress, though sustaining that momentum through upper grades remains the key challenge ahead.

Open Quote Hawthorne has a low student/teacher ratio which has been a true benefit to my son. The principle / vice principle team work well together and have really turned the school around. The school supports a very diverse community both economically and internationally as well as offering an inclusion program for special needs kids. They do a lot with very little. Test scores can be deceiving. It's a jewel. Close Quote
