Summary

Pleasantdale Elementary School in Doraville, GA, serves 794 students in grades PK-5 within the DeKalb County School District, where 86% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Georgia elementary schools over the past five years, with test scores on the Georgia Milestones assessments significantly below both district and state averages across all subjects and grade levels. However, there is a notable bright spot: in 4th Grade Mathematics, 38.4% of students were proficient in 2024-2025, which actually surpasses the district average and outperforms nearby schools like Henderson Mill Elementary School (31.6%) and Evansdale Elementary School (34.4%).

Chronic absenteeism remains a significant challenge at Pleasantdale, with 22.7% of students chronically absent in 2024-2025—the highest rate among its DeKalb County peers. For comparison, nearby Livsey Elementary School has a rate of only 8.9%, and Doraville United Elementary School has a rate of 10.6%. Interestingly, Doraville United has even lower test scores despite much lower absenteeism, suggesting that high poverty rates are a powerful driver of performance. The school spends $18,316 per student, which is higher than the district average, yet this investment does not translate into strong academic outcomes—a stark contrast to Livsey, which spends $24,778 per student and achieves top-quartile results.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of progress. The school’s state ranking improved from the 11th percentile to the 19th percentile in 2024-2025, and test scores improved in 8 out of 7 subject-grade combinations compared to the previous year. The chronic absenteeism rate also dropped significantly from 28.9% to 22.7%. While Pleasantdale still has a long way to go to catch up to high-performing neighbors like Midvale Elementary School and Livsey, these recent trends suggest that interventions may be starting to have a positive impact. The school faces a "double challenge" of high poverty and high absenteeism, but the success of nearby schools serving similar demographics shows that improvement is possible with effective leadership and targeted instruction.

Open Quote This school just regained it's state certification a few years ago. Low test scores. Most families are immigrants who do not speak English and neither do many kids when they begin here. They are trying to improve by adding a few extra curricular activities and some teachers who seem willing to actually teach. Close Quote
