Hartford School District serves approximately 15,527 students across 39 schools — 22 elementary, 6 middle, 10 high, and 1 alternative school — and ranks 148th out of 153 Connecticut districts, placing it in the bottom 3 percent statewide. Betances Learning Lab Magnet School is the highest-ranked elementary school, with 3rd- and 4th-grade math exceeding state levels. STEM Magnet at Annie Fisher School also beats state math averages in grades 4 through 6, while Renzulli Gifted and Talented Academy has the district's lowest chronic absenteeism at 8.0%. Betances STEM Magnet School is the strongest traditional middle school, posting 36.0% 6th-grade math proficiency versus 21.1% district-wide.

For parents, two patterns matter most. Attendance is the clearest dividing line: the lowest-performing schools — Bulkeley High School, Hartford Public High School, Burr Middle School, and Milner Middle School — all have chronic absenteeism above 50%, while top schools hover near or below the state rate. Math is the district's largest instructional gap; even strong schools like Classical Magnet School and Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy reach only 11.6% and 20.0% SAT math proficiency despite solid ELA results. Graduation rates are a relative bright spot, but high graduation can coexist with low test scores.
