Summary

McDonough Middle School is a traditional public middle school in Hartford, CT, serving 301 students in grades 6 through 8 as part of the Hartford School District, a district ranked 148th out of 153 statewide. The school has been one of Connecticut's lowest-performing middle schools for over a decade, never rising above the 5th percentile in statewide rankings since 2015–2016. On the positive side, chronic absenteeism has fallen dramatically — from 65% in 2021–2022 to 35% in 2025–2026 — and is now slightly below the Hartford district average, though still about double the state average of 16.4%.

Academically, proficiency rates remain critically low across all subjects. In the most recent testing year, fewer than 1 in 10 students scored proficient in math at any grade level (6.9% to 9.7%), while ELA proficiency ranged from 13.6% to 18.4% — roughly one-third of the state average. The school shows a relative strength for English Language Learners, who ranked at the 46th percentile statewide in 2021–2022, but special education students have ranked at the very bottom of the state in two of the last three available years. Some scores are trending upward — 8th grade ELA nearly doubled in one year — but the school remains far from state benchmarks.

Compared with nearby schools, McDonough sits on a sharp geographic fault line. A few miles away, Sedgwick Middle School (ranked 55th) and Bristow Middle School (ranked 69th) in West Hartford post ELA proficiency rates of 61–71% and math rates of 51–67%. Even within Hartford, Betances STEM Magnet School ranks 168th statewide, with 36% of 6th graders proficient in math versus McDonough's 7.4%, and a chronic absenteeism rate of 17.1%. McDonough is not the lowest in the district — Burr Middle School ranks last in the state and Milner Middle School ranks 257th — but it spends roughly $19,300 per student, more than many higher-performing schools, suggesting that additional money alone is not translating into academic gains.
