Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) is a combined middle and high school in Hartford, CT, serving 463 students in grades 6–12 as part of the Hartford School District. Among Hartford-area public schools, SMSA stands out in several ways. Its 2024–25 state ranking of 99th out of 141 Connecticut high schools is better than most nearby options, including Classical Magnet School, Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, Hartford Public High School, and A. I. Prince Technical High School; only Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy ranks higher, and only narrowly. SMSA's 91.9% graduation rate in 2024–25 exceeded both the district (85.3%) and state (91.2%) averages. Its 11th-grade SAT math proficiency was 24.1% — more than 12 points above the district average and the highest among nearby schools with reported data. Science proficiency (24%) was also above district levels.

SMSA's biggest strengths appear in the upper grades and among specific student groups. The school earned a notably strong subgroup ranking for Hispanic students in 2024–25 (25th of 63 schools). Its main challenges are low middle-grade proficiency (8th-grade math was just 12.7% proficient in 2025–26) and high chronic absenteeism (39.0%, more than double the state rate of 16.4%). Test scores also fluctuate significantly year to year, so single-year results should be read with caution. Overall, SMSA is one of the more effective public options within Hartford's struggling district — a relative success story, even though its statewide standing remains modest.
