Summary

Vista Ridge High School is a large comprehensive public high school in Colorado Springs, CO, serving 1,473 students in grades 9–12 as part of El Paso County Colorado School District 49, a 4-star district ranked 33rd out of 115 in Colorado. The school's clearest strength is its graduation rate: 93.4% in 2024–2025, far above the district's 63.5% and the state's 85.6%, with a dropout rate of just 1.2% compared to 6.7% districtwide. Academically, Vista Ridge outperforms its district on every tested subject — SAT reading/writing proficiency is 57% versus the district's 40%, and math is 19% versus 11% — but math remains well below the state average of 32%. Science proficiency dropped to 22.7% in 2025–2026 after posting 37.4% the prior year, reflecting year-to-year volatility.

The most urgent concern is chronic absenteeism. In 2024–2025, 46.6% of students were chronically absent — nearly half of the student body — compared to 26.1% for the district and 28.4% statewide, and the rate jumped sharply from 34.9% the prior year. Nearby Pine Creek High School (23.7%) and Liberty High School (24.0%) have far lower absenteeism, while Sand Creek High School (48.7%) and Doherty High School (56.0%) are comparable or worse. The combination of a high graduation rate and extremely high absenteeism suggests many students stay on track to earn diplomas despite missing substantial school time.

Compared to nearby schools, Vista Ridge High School is a bright spot within its own district — Sand Creek High School ranks lower overall and posts weaker test scores — but it is not competitive with the highly rated Academy District 20 schools a few miles away. Pine Creek High School posts SAT reading/writing proficiency of 83% and math of 51% versus Vista Ridge's 57% and 19%, and Rampart High School also outperforms Vista Ridge academically. Power Technical, a small career-focused school, beats Vista Ridge in math and science with much lower absenteeism. Rising economic need provides important context: roughly 38% of students now qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, up from 26.5% two years earlier. The bottom line is a school that graduates students at an impressive rate, but where attendance and math and science proficiency need significant attention.
