Summary

[Highline Academy Northeast](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336006609/school.aspx) is an elementary school serving 589 students in grades PK–5 in the northeast Denver area, operating as part of [School District No. 1](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/district/03360/search.aspx). The school serves a predominantly low-income population, with 73.5% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch—a high rate, though lower than most of its nearby peer schools. Academically, the school sits in the lower tier of Colorado elementary schools, ranking in the 19th percentile statewide with a 1-star rating, well below district and state averages in English Language Arts, math, and science.

Where Highline stands out is in its learning environment. The school boasts the lowest student-to-teacher ratio in the area at 11.3, compared to 15.9 at [Marie L. Greenwood Academy](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336001739/school.aspx) and 17.9 at [Florida Pitt-Waller Ece-8 School](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336001933/school.aspx). Its ELA proficiency rate of 31.1% outpaces several nearby schools, including [Barney Ford Elementary School](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336006521/school.aspx), [Marrama Elementary School](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336001380/school.aspx), and [High Point Academy](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0002002033/school.aspx). Highline also has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (35.8%) than the district average and most neighbors, including [SOAR at Green Valley Ranch](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336006486/school.aspx) at 41.6% and [Omar D Blair Charter School](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336001838/school.aspx) at 42.8%. The school has shown steady improvement over the past few years, with particular gains among low-income students and other historically underserved groups.

However, there are clear areas of concern. Only 10.4% of 5th graders are proficient in science, far below the district average of 33.2% and trailing schools like [Lena Archuleta Elementary School](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336001864/school.aspx) at 29.0% and SOAR at 26.0%. Fourth-grade math is a notable red flag, with just 11.3% proficiency compared to 24.4% in 3rd grade. Male students also lag behind female students in statewide rankings. While Highline outperforms several of its closest neighbors, schools like [KIPP Northeast Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CO/schools/0336006652/school.aspx) and Lena Archuleta achieve stronger results with larger class sizes, suggesting that instructional strategy may matter more than class size alone. The school is on a modest upward trajectory but still has significant ground to cover.

Open Quote I have three kids at this school and we all LOVE IT. The last negative post is outdated and skewed. Personally, I loved the music teacher they referred to (because he actually got my kids excited about music!), but I love the new teacher as well. And yes, there was a turnover in leadership several years ago, which takes time to level out. The current principal is solid and clearly dedicated to the community and the kids - you see him everyday at the dropoff/pickup line. The teachers are wonderful and always available - they reach out to parents in a variety of ways and remain consistently responsive to parent requests. The students are widely varied in backgrounds, and the school does an EXCELLENT job of promoting and celebrating this diversity. But the thing I love most of all, my kids loooooove going to this school. They're all building strong friendships and striving for personal growth, while other students, teacher and staff cheer them on daily. I can't imagine going anywhere else. This school is awesome! Open Quote The first couple of years we had at this school were great. Since the original principal left it has gone downhill. I won't let my kids attend music class given the teacher does whatever he wants, lets the kids hear bad music and videos. They don't follow my sons IEP and can't seem to support their teachers enough to keep them from leaving in the middle of the school year. Three 4th grads teachers in one year is sad! Close Quote
