The district is ranked 38th out of 115 Colorado districts, placing it in the upper third statewide with a 3-star rating, though the range between its best and most challenged schools is enormous. The district's brightest spots are clear. Redlands Middle School leads the middle schools, ranking 52nd of 469 statewide, with 8th-grade science proficiency of 70.3%—roughly double the district average—and math and ELA proficiency both above 60%. At the high school level, Fruita Monument High School stands out with a 96.0% graduation rate, above-state SAT Reading/Writing (68%) and SAT Math (37%), and 11th-grade science proficiency of 47.8% that is nearly double the district rate. Mesa Valley Community School, a small 6-12 school, also impresses with a 94.4% graduation rate, 80% SAT Reading/Writing proficiency, and just 11.2% chronic absenteeism.

At the other end of the spectrum, several schools face serious challenges. R-5 High School has 93.5% chronic absenteeism and a 49.1% graduation rate, while Rocky Mountain Elementary School, Clifton Elementary School, and Grand Mesa Middle School all sit below the 15th percentile statewide with math proficiency in the teens or lower. Chronic absenteeism is the district's most common challenge, and math is its weakest subject across all levels, including a 26% SAT Math rate district-wide. Encouragingly, high-poverty schools like Independence Academy (87.6% free/reduced lunch, 47.1% ELA proficiency, 14.6% chronic absenteeism) and Dual Immersion Academy School (93.6% free/reduced lunch, 43.6% ELA) prove that poverty does not have to dictate outcomes.
