Summary

Grand Junction High School is a large comprehensive high school in Grand Junction, Colorado, serving 1,832 students in grades 9–12 as part of Mesa County Valley School District No. 51. Over the past five years, the school has climbed steadily in state rankings, moving from the 22nd percentile in 2020–2021 to the 59th percentile in 2025–2026, and now holds a three-star rating.

Reading and writing are clear strengths. Ninth and tenth graders outperformed both district and state averages on PSAT reading/writing assessments, and 11th graders posted 65% proficiency on the SAT reading/writing section, compared to 60% statewide. Math is a different story. While 9th graders score above the state average in math, only 24% of 11th graders are proficient on SAT math, versus 32% statewide. That 41-point gap between reading and math is the school's biggest academic concern. Chronic absenteeism is also serious: 46.6% of students are chronically absent, far above the state rate of 28.4%, and the problem has worsened in the past year.

Compared with nearby schools, Grand Junction holds its own. It ranks well above Central High School and Palisade High School, and it matches or exceeds Fruita Monument High School in reading/writing assessments. However, Fruita Monument has a much higher graduation rate (96% vs. 82.4%) and stronger math scores. Palisade also graduates a larger share of its students. Grand Junction's graduation rate of 82.4% is above the district average but below the state average. Gifted and talented students perform especially well, ranking in the 69th percentile statewide, while students with disabilities have shown limited progress. For parents, this is a school with strong literacy outcomes and real upward momentum, but math proficiency and attendance remain significant challenges.
