Chatfield Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Grand Junction, CO, serving 371 students as part of Mesa County Valley School District No. 51. Chatfield has one of the more dramatic turnaround stories in the area. After ranking near the bottom of Colorado elementary schools in the late 2010s — as low as the 6th percentile in 2018-19 — the school climbed to the 57th–59th percentile in 2022-23 and 2024-25. In 2024-25, Chatfield posted standout results: 49.4% ELA proficiency and 44.5% math proficiency, both well above district and state averages. The most recent 2025-26 results, however, dipped to 39.8% ELA and 34.4% math, slightly below district and state averages, and the school's statewide rank slipped to the 44th percentile. Even with that dip, Chatfield outperforms nearby Rocky Mountain Elementary School by wide margins — nearly 20 percentage points in ELA — and its results remain comparable to Mesa View Elementary School.

One of Chatfield's standout strengths is how well it serves students from low-income families. In 2024-25, the school ranked in the 91st percentile statewide for this group, a strong signal given that roughly 6 in 10 students qualify for free/reduced lunch. The school also shows meaningful academic growth between 3rd and 5th grade — proficiency rises steadily in both ELA and math — and 5th-grade science (31.8%) is above the district average. This is an excellent school who truly cares about their students, staff, parents, and surrounding community. Over the last three year the staff has engaged in professional development and protocols that have earned the school multiple awards for growth and achievement. Three years ago the school was ranked 911th and is now rated 461st. This shows the focus the staff has to improving outcomes for their students. Close Quote
