Summary

Loma Elementary School is a small rural school in Loma, Colorado, serving 207 students in grades PK-5 as part of Mesa County Valley School District No. 51. The school has climbed from the bottom third of Colorado elementary schools a decade ago to a middle-of-the-pack ranking this year (47th percentile statewide), while also improving its student-teacher ratio to a solid 14.8. Chronic absenteeism runs at 21 percent — still one in five students, but dramatically better than the district average of 36.7 percent.

The most remarkable finding is how well Loma serves students from low-income families. Its low-income students rank in the 87th percentile statewide (43rd out of 319 schools), a stunning turnaround from the 14th percentile just a few years ago. Math is also a quiet strength: 5th graders posted a 51.4 percent math proficiency rate in 2025-2026, more than 12 points above both district and state averages, and the school's overall math scores have now topped the district for three straight years.

Early literacy is the critical weak link — only 18.2 percent of 3rd graders were proficient in English language arts, roughly 23 points behind the state average, even as the same school's 4th and 5th graders score above average. Science is also a persistent blind spot, with 5th grade proficiency at just 20 percent. Compared to nearby Shelledy Elementary (57.3 percent ELA) and Appleton Elementary (70.4 percent ELA), Loma trails by roughly 10 to 20 points in core subjects. The opportunity ahead is clear: replicate what works for its low-income students and strong math program across all grades and subjects.
