Roosevelt Middle

Summary:

Roosevelt Middle is a public middle school located in Oceanside, California, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 779 students. The school is part of the Vista Unified School District, which is ranked 798 out of 1,560 districts in California and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Roosevelt Middle faces several key challenges, including a significantly higher Hispanic student population (68.68%) compared to nearby schools, lower academic performance as measured by standardized test scores, and a higher chronic absenteeism rate of 29.5%. The school also has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (70.35%) compared to nearby schools. These factors likely contribute to Roosevelt Middle's declining performance, with the school's statewide ranking dropping from 497 out of 2,236 California middle schools in 2010-2011 to 1,833 out of 2,788 schools in 2022-2023, and its SchoolDigger rating decreasing from 4 stars to 2 stars over the same period.

When compared to other schools in the Vista Unified School District, Roosevelt Middle's academic performance is significantly lower than Vista Magnet Middle School of Technology Science and Math, which outperforms Roosevelt Middle across multiple metrics, including test scores and chronic absenteeism. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Roosevelt Middle, coupled with the school's lower academic performance, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son loves his school and so do I. There are programs for everyone (band, choir, art, hiking club, tons of other clubs, sports...) The teachers and support staff are very supportive and caring. The new principal was a teacher at RBV high school for many years and now Roosevelt is lucky to have Mrs. Golly as its' leader. I don't hesitate at all to recommend RMS and its' Artful Learning curriculum! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
