Summary

Lugonia Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 527 students in the Redlands Unified School District, located in a high-need community where over 83% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency rates in English, math, and science far below both district and state averages; for example, only about 20% of students are proficient in math. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, affecting nearly 32% of students. Perhaps most striking is the school's sharp decline over the past decade, falling from a 3-star to a 1-star rating in statewide rankings.

When compared to nearby schools like Highland Grove Elementary or Franklin Elementary, Lugonia's performance gap is pronounced, even with similar student demographics and slightly higher per-student funding. This suggests factors beyond resources or community economics are at play. The struggle is especially evident in upper-grade math and science, and the school's effectiveness in serving English learners and students with special needs has declined in recent years.

Open Quote I worked at this school. The behavior problems with many students is staggering. Students hitting adults without discipline because of regulations. Administration does its best but alot parents or grandparents won't participate in changing poor behavior because the children don't behave aggressively at home. Parent involvement is weak because of above average number of single parent households and employment schedules. Apathy was witnessed multiple times during student teacher conferences and lies to parents about poor classroom behavior by students to avoid the consequences both at school and home.
