Summary

Smiley Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 634 students in the Redlands Unified district, consistently performing above average academically despite serving a student population with significant economic need.

The school's key strength is its ability to help students achieve strong academic results, particularly in English Language Arts, where it outperforms both district and state averages. This is notable when compared to some nearby schools like Franklin Elementary or Lugonia Elementary, which have similar or higher levels of economic disadvantage but lower test scores. Smiley also shows particular effectiveness with its Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, ranking higher for these groups than many peers such as Crafton Elementary and Bryn Mawr Elementary.

However, parents should be aware of two main challenges. First, chronic absenteeism is high at 27.4%, significantly above the rates at schools like Kimberly Elementary (13.3%) and Mariposa Elementary (14.7%). Second, while the school's overall ranking has been historically consistent, it has recently declined, partly due to a drop in mathematics performance in the upper grades. Addressing attendance and supporting math learning in 4th and 5th grade appear to be the school's primary opportunities for improvement.
