Summary

Berendo Middle is a public school in the Los Angeles Unified school district serving about 550 students in grades 6-8, located in a high-need area where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, ranking in the bottom quarter of all California middle schools with proficiency rates in English, math, and science that are notably lower than many nearby schools, including Virgil Middle and Magnolia Science Academy 6. This is despite Berendo Middle spending more per student than most neighboring schools and having a relatively low number of students per teacher, suggesting resources alone are not translating to stronger academic results.

There are some positive signs, however, as the school has made impressive progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism, now coming in below the district average. The analysis also shows the school serves some groups of students, like English Learners and students in special education, relatively better than its overall ranking. The fact that other schools in the immediate area with very similar student populations achieve much higher results indicates that improvement at Berendo Middle is possible with the right strategies.

Open Quote This school has really turned around. 10 years ago it was covered with graffiti and there were fights. Now the neighborhood has turned around. The gang/graffiti problem is gone. The student population is now positive and has a strong culture of learning. One down side is there in a charter co-location on the site. The lausd board members really messed up by allowing that to open. Close Quote
