Summary

Young Oak Kim Academy (YOKA) is a large public middle school serving about 715 students in grades 6-8 within the Los Angeles Unified School District, notable for its strong student attendance and consistent academic improvement.

The school's most significant strength is its exceptionally low rate of chronic absenteeism at 11.7%, which is less than half the district average and better than nearly all nearby schools, including Virgil Middle and Berendo Middle. YOKA has shown steady academic growth, moving from a 1-star to a 2-star state rating over the past decade, and it performs particularly well with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This progress is achieved with a lower per-student budget than comparable schools like John H. Liechty Middle.

While YOKA excels at getting students to school, academic proficiency in English, math, and especially science remains below state averages, a challenge shared with many area schools. In contrast, the highest-performing nearby school, Magnolia Science Academy 6, has stronger test scores but a higher absenteeism rate. YOKA's pattern shows effective student engagement and resilience, with attendance recovering sharply after the pandemic while test scores continued to climb, indicating a school on a positive trajectory.

Open Quote Excellent school with so much support for student achievement and personal development. Lots of technology here, and the STEM Lab, Library, Dance Studio, and Rock Climbing Wall are very cool places on campus. It is a safe campus with a very dedicated staff. Students are fortunate to learn in single-gender classrooms and to receive so much STEM-oriented education. Highly recommended middle school! Close Quote
