Summary:

The four schools in zip code 90035 span kindergarten through grade 12: two elementary schools, a middle school and a 6–12 school. In the latest year with results for three schools, 2025–2026, proficiency varied widely. The most important finding is that school choice matters: ELA results ranged from 29% to 79%, a 50-point spread.

Canfield Avenue Elementary led the 2025–2026 all-grades results, with 79% proficient in ELA, 72% in math and 68% in science—30, 34 and 32 points above state results. Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies also stood out, at 74% in ELA, 53% in math and 64% in science. Crescent Heights Boulevard Elementary had the lowest ELA and science results among those three, at 29% and 37%; its math result was 44%, 6 points above the state. In 2024–2025, Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter Middle had the lowest all-grades results in each subject: 29% in ELA, 10% in math and 17% in science. The secondary-school gap also appears in the overlapping grades: Center outscored Romero in grades 6–8 by 43–46 points in ELA and 39–49 points in math.

Across Canfield, Center and Crescent Heights, average scores rose from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by 1 point in ELA, 4 in math and 7 in science; Crescent Heights’ ELA result fell by 4 points even as its math and science results improved by 7 points each. SchoolDigger ranked Canfield in the 93rd percentile and Center in the 90th in 2025–2026; Crescent Heights was in the 46th percentile, while Romero’s latest rank was the 16th percentile. Reported student-teacher ratios are similar, from 19.9 to 20.5. The 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 50% at Canfield, 57% at Center, 91% at Crescent Heights and 91% at Romero; these are context, not an explanation for results. Romero has no 2025–2026 test results, so its latest scores are from 2024–2025.
