Summary

Leo Politi Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 504 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, located in a high-need area where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency rates in English, math, and science falling well below both the district and state averages; for example, only about 30% of students are proficient in English and 23% in math, compared to a district average of 46% and 37%, respectively. This performance lags behind many nearby schools, including Hoover Street Elementary, which serves a similar student population but achieves much higher proficiency rates. A particular area of concern is science, where proficiency is less than half the district average.

Despite these academic struggles, the school has a more favorable student-teacher ratio than many neighbors and spends more per student than most comparable schools in the area. It has also made notable progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism since the pandemic. The data shows that while the school has resources and some positive trends, it has not yet translated these advantages into stronger academic outcomes for its students.

Open Quote This school needs to get it together and concentrate more on academics and less on social issues. Instead of concentrating on solving its problems personnel is shifted around consistently resulting in increased low scores and lack of accountability. They also need to be more inclusive and diverse to succeed and raise their test scores and grades. Close Quote
