Summary:

The 51 elementary schools in Sacramento City Unified serve different grade spans across the Sacramento area. Their 2025–2026 proficiency results vary sharply: the reported all-grade school-to-school ranges are 71 percentage points in English language arts (ELA), 73 in math and 70 in science. The most important takeaway is that districtwide figures would hide very different academic results from one school to another.

Phoebe A. Hearst Elementary leads in ELA and science, with 81% and 73% proficient, while Crocker/Riverside Elementary leads math at 80%; the state rates are 49% in ELA, 38% in math and 36% in science. Those leaders are about 32, 37 and 42 points above the state in their leading subjects, respectively. At the low end, John Morse Therapeutic Center has 10% ELA proficiency, 40 points below the state; Leataata Floyd Elementary has 7% in math, 31 points below; and Mark Twain Elementary has 3% in science, 33 points below. Results can also differ by subject: Bret Harte Elementary is above the state in science but below it in ELA and math.

Results have moved in different directions year to year: state rates rose by less than 1 point in ELA, 1 point in math and 3 points in science, while school changes included a 24-point science gain at Sutterville Elementary and a 22-point science decline at Camellia Elementary. SchoolDigger ranks Phoebe A. Hearst 176th of 5,804 schools in 2025–2026, up from 299th of 5,869 in 2023–2024; Caleb Greenwood Elementary ranked 543rd, compared with 391st in 2023–2024. The free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–2025 offers context, not a prediction: it was 15% at Phoebe A. Hearst and 84% at Camellia, which had 66% proficiency in both ELA and math. Because grade spans differ, all-grade comparisons are not like-for-like; John Morse’s science result is suppressed.
