Summary:

There are 13 high schools in Sacramento City Unified, serving grades 9–12, with School of Engineering & Sciences and Umoja International Academy also serving grades 7–8. The schools’ average 2025–2026 proficiency was below state results in ELA, math, and science: 40% versus 49%, 19% versus 38%, and 30% versus 36%. The most important finding is how uneven results are: the highest-to-lowest school gaps were 78 points in ELA, 68 in math, and 75 in science.

West Campus leads by a wide margin, with 90% ELA, 71% math, and 83% science proficiency; SchoolDigger ranks it 22nd of 2,137 statewide, in the 99th percentile. Its results are 40, 32, and 47 points above the state rates in those subjects. At the other end, American Legion High (Continuation) has 12% ELA, 3% math, and 7% science proficiency, and ranks 1,848th, in the 14th percentile. School of Engineering & Sciences is another strong option to examine: its 11th graders reached 69% in ELA, 59% in math, and 79% in science. Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High also stands out in ELA at 58%, second-highest in the group, though its math result is 21%.

Science showed the clearest recent improvement: the average school result rose 5 points between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, while the state rate rose 3 points, narrowing the gap. SchoolDigger’s three-year rankings also show mixed movement: School of Engineering & Sciences rose from the 76th to the 91st percentile, while West Campus remained in the 99th. School size and student-teacher ratio do not neatly predict results: West Campus leads despite a group-high ratio of 27.7, while The MET has a ratio of 17.1 and 7% math proficiency. All schools report free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025, from 44% at The MET to 88% at Sacramento New Technology Early College High; California reports that all students receive free school meals, so consider that context when comparing these measures. Because the two 7–12 schools include grades 7–8 in their all-grades results, their 11th-grade figures are more comparable with other high schools.
