Summary:
Huntington Beach Union High includes eight high schools, all serving grades 9–12, with 2025–26 results that vary widely from school to school. Across the eight schools, the equal-weight average was 58% in ELA and 40% in science—above state averages of 49% and 36%—but 37% in math, just below the state’s 38%. The most important finding is that these averages mask large differences: the top-to-bottom gap is 70 percentage points in ELA, 58 in math and 53 in science.
Fountain Valley High leads in ELA, at 81%, and science, at 64%; it is also second in math. Marina High leads math at 62% and ranks second in ELA and science. At the other end, Valley Vista High is lowest in all three subjects, with 11% in ELA, 4% in math and 11% in science. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 statewide rankings tell a similar story: Fountain Valley was 119th of 2,137 schools, in the 94th percentile with five stars; Valley Vista was 1,818th, in the 15th percentile with one star.
Over the past year, the eight-school average fell by 1 percentage point in ELA and rose by 1 in math and 2 in science, while state results improved more overall. Still, the 11th-grade averages were above their grade-specific state comparisons in all three subjects, including math by 5 points. Other measures also show different school profiles: Fountain Valley has the highest student–teacher ratio, 27.3, while Coast High has the lowest, 17.7. The reported free/reduced lunch eligible share for 2024–25 ranged from 27% at Edison High to 86% at Westminster High; these figures are context, not an explanation for results. Coast’s 98% graduation rate is also notably higher than its proficiency results (48% ELA, 20% math and 20% science) and its 28% chronic absenteeism rate.
