Summary

Edison High is a large, well-regarded public high school serving grades 9-12 with approximately 2,049 students in the coastal community of Huntington Beach, operating within the Huntington Beach Union High district.

The school consistently delivers strong results, with a 95% graduation rate, excellent attendance, and academic performance that places it in the top 15% of California high schools, particularly excelling in English. While still a top-tier school, its statewide ranking has seen a slight, gradual decline over the past few years. An interesting point for parents is that Edison spends more per student than some nearby schools, including the higher-performing Fountain Valley High, which achieves its results with a different student population profile.

Compared to other schools in the area, Edison holds a solid middle position: it significantly outperforms schools like Valley Vista High and Costa Mesa High, while trailing specialized programs like Early College High. The school shows notable strengths in supporting special education students but has seen recent performance dips among specific student groups. Mathematics proficiency, while above the state average, is a relative weakness compared to its English scores, a trend common in the region.

Open Quote I'm not quite sure how they're ranking the schools within this district. As a parent, I would send my child to Edison over Fountain Valley in a heartbeat. In my experience, the student body is more academically-focused, and the extra-curricular activities are also superior. I'm not sure why one would get a "4" and the other a "5". Huntington Beach High is also good, and has actually gotten significantly better over the years as more high-end housing has been developed in the neighborhoods feeding into that school.
