Summary:

The 31 schools in Newport-Mesa Unified include 22 elementary schools, two middle schools and seven high schools, serving students from elementary through high school. The latest listed proficiency results cover 29 schools; school-wide scores include different grade spans, Woodland has no listed results and Pomona’s latest are from 2024–25. The clearest takeaway is how much results differ from school to school: the 2025–26 spread between the highest and lowest results was 78 percentage points in ELA, 75 points in math and 69 points in science.

Roy O. Andersen Elementary leads ELA and math, with 87% and 88% proficient—37 and 49 points above state results. Harbor View Elementary leads science at 82%, 46 points above the state, just ahead of Newport Heights Elementary at 80%. Among high schools, Early College High stands out, with 11th-grade proficiency of 83% in ELA, 66% in math and 64% in science. At the other end, Back Bay High has the lowest all-grades ELA and science results, at 9% and 13%; Monte Vista Independent Study has the lowest math result, 13%. The middle-school comparison also favors Horace Ensign Intermediate: it leads Charles W. Tewinkle Middle by 25–28 points in seventh- and eighth-grade ELA, and by 27–29 points in math.

Across schools, average science proficiency rose from 41% in 2024–25 to 45% in 2025–26, while ELA slipped from 60% to 59% and math was essentially unchanged at 50%. These are unweighted school averages; the current average school result is 12 points above the state in math, 10 in ELA and 9 in science. Individual results moved differently: Monte Vista Independent Study’s ELA rose 19 points, while Early College High’s fell 12; science rose 25 points at Harbor View Elementary and fell 14 at Mariners Elementary. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings also show different longer-term directions: California Elementary rose from 77 to 86, while Newport Harbor High moved from 84 to 78. As context, free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 were similar at Costa Mesa High (73%), Adams Elementary (74%) and Sonora Elementary (75%), yet their scores differed; that measure does not explain the results.
