Summary:

Huntington Beach City Elementary includes eight schools—six elementary schools and two middle schools—with 4,560 students across elementary and middle grades. In 2025–2026, all eight schools were above the state results in ELA, math and science: their unweighted school averages were 70% in ELA, 67% in math and 58% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The area’s largest advantage over the state was in math, at 28 points. The most important finding for families is that this strong overall picture hides substantial differences between schools.

Ralph E. Hawes Elementary leads in ELA and math, with 81% and 79% proficient; John H. Eader Elementary leads science at 71%. SchoolDigger gives Hawes a five-star rating and a rank of 202 out of 5,804 elementary schools, and Eader five stars and a rank of 326. At the other end, John R. Peterson Elementary is lowest in ELA at 51% and science at 46%; those results are 23 and 14 points below the other schools’ averages in those subjects. Ethel Dwyer Middle has the lowest math result, 57%, about 11 points below the other schools’ average. Between the middle schools, Isaac L. Sowers Middle leads overall in ELA, math and science by about 1, 7 and 10 points, respectively.

Recent results show some important exceptions to the strong overall picture: the eight-school averages fell by about 2 points in ELA, 1 in math and 3 in science from 2024–2025, while state results rose in all three. Peterson declined by 10 points in ELA, 5 in math and 7 in science; Eader’s science result rose by 13 points. SchoolDigger’s Peterson rank also fell, from 716 of 5,869 to 1,811 of 5,804, while Eader’s improved to 326 of 5,804. School characteristics offer context, not an explanation: in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 18% at Hawes and 46% at Peterson, while their student-teacher ratios were similar at 22.4 and 22.7. All-grades results combine schools serving different grades, so grade-specific results can help families compare the same grade.
