Summary:

The 14 elementary schools in ZIP code 85142 serve elementary grades, though their grade spans differ. Their average 2025–26 proficiency was about 55% in English language arts (ELA) and 53% in math, compared with Arizona averages of 41% and 33%, respectively. But those above-state averages mask the most important finding: results vary sharply from school to school.

Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary is the clearest standout, leading the schools with 78% ELA and 81% math; its ELA result is 13 percentage points above the next-highest, Cortina Elementary, and its math result is 11 points above Frances Brandon-Pickett Elementary. SchoolDigger ranks Barney #19 of 900 statewide, at the 98th percentile, and gives it five stars. At the other end, San Tan Heights Elementary School has the lowest results: 21% ELA and 18% math, respectively 26 and 19 points below the next-lowest schools. In grade 5 science, Barney leads at 75%, while San Tan Heights has the lowest result at 20%.

SchoolDigger’s average statewide percentile ranking across the group was virtually unchanged, at about the 70th percentile in both 2023–24 and 2025–26, but individual schools moved: Frances Brandon-Pickett rose from the 74th to 88th percentile, while Dr. Gary and Annette Auxier Elementary School fell from the 69th to 54th and San Tan Heights from the 18th to 6th. Grade-specific results can also change the picture: Queen Creek Elementary School posted 84% grade 5 math proficiency but 42% in grade 6, while Frances Brandon-Pickett recorded 69% grade 6 ELA and 63% math. A lower student-teacher ratio does not automatically mean higher results: American Leadership Academy Signal Butte K-6 has the lowest listed ratio, 11.2, and results of 47% ELA and 44% math, while Barney’s ratio is 22.4. Free/reduced-lunch rates are not available, and schools’ differing grade spans mean all-grades results are not perfectly comparable.
