Summary

Semmes Middle School serves 1,181 students in grades 6-8 in Semmes, Alabama, as part of the Mobile County school district, and has shown steady improvement over the past three years, moving from the 32nd to the 47th percentile statewide.

This school stands out for its exceptional support of student groups that often struggle elsewhere. Special education students rank in the 67th percentile statewide, African American students in the 60th percentile, and English Language Learners have improved dramatically—jumping from the 30th to the 62nd percentile in just two years. The school also posted strong 8th grade science scores, with 56.85% proficient, beating both district and state averages. Chronic absenteeism has dropped significantly from 48.7% to 18.2% over three years, showing effective interventions are taking hold. However, math remains a challenge across all grades, with proficiency rates (18-25%) trailing state averages, and Hispanic students have seen a concerning decline in performance. The school spends less per student ($7,927) than several nearby schools yet achieves better outcomes than Booker T Washington Middle School (11th percentile) and Burns Middle School (14th percentile).

Compared to the area's magnet schools like Phillips Preparatory Middle School (98th percentile) and ClarkShaw Magnet School (97th percentile), Semmes has significantly lower proficiency rates, though this gap reflects differences in student selection and resources. The nearby Saraland Middle SchoolAdams Campus (4th statewide) achieves dramatically better results with a similar student-teacher ratio, suggesting curriculum and school culture play major roles. For families, Semmes offers a school that is improving, serves diverse learners well, and provides solid support—but students may need extra math help, and the academic environment differs notably from the area's magnet options.

Open Quote I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. My son currently goes to school here and has had so many issues with other students. The teachers sent home the wrong grades for him. The office contacted me about a student who wasn't even my son. They didn't even know for sure which homeroom teachers the students would have until 2-3 weeks into the new school year. This place is a mess! Close Quote
