Summary

Mary G Montgomery High School is a large public high school in Semmes, AL, serving approximately 1,888 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Mobile County school district. The school currently ranks in the middle of the pack statewide, but several key areas show real momentum that parents will want to know about.

One of the school's standout strengths is English Language Arts. In the most recent school year, Mary G Montgomery matched the state average in English proficiency (33.73%) and significantly outperformed its district average (28.57%). This is a remarkable jump from the prior year, when only 22.49% of students were proficient. The school also runs a model program for English Language Learners, ranking in the 66th percentile statewide—a consistent strength over multiple years. Additionally, the graduation rate has climbed impressively from 84.8% to 91.3% over two years, nearly matching the state average. Chronic absenteeism has also plummeted from a concerning 40.1% to just 13.5%, now in line with state norms. These improvements suggest effective support systems are taking hold.

However, math and science remain significant challenges. Only 15.08% of students are proficient in math, compared to 27.21% statewide, and science proficiency trails the state by about 11 points. These subjects are holding back the school's overall ranking, which sits at the 45th percentile—above lower-performing nearby schools like CF Vigor High School and Mattie T Blount High School, but below higher-performing neighbors like WP Davidson High School and Baker High School. With about half of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the school serves a moderately diverse economic population. While special education support has shown recent improvement, military-connected students and multi-racial students may need additional attention. Overall, Mary G Montgomery is on an upward trajectory, with strong English programs and improving graduation rates—but math instruction remains the key area to watch.

Open Quote They implemented all of these covid measures and went with these digital solutions but failed to test and request improvements from the company to better the system. Ie football was canceled due to rain, before the game started, we were not refunded money nor given a ticket to rescheduled game, if they were rescheduling the game. They use the same for all events the system is broken and they refuse to address the issue. They informed we could address the website but the SCHOOL HAS TO DO IT not parents. It also seems that the digital website for the school is in the same boat it can't find my child but a teacher has sent me a message through the system that can not find my child. There are bugs with it and they are not addressing the issue. So Yes the ranking and the test they receive I can see why they are what they are, It because of lack of leadership from the principles and the county and no way to make formal complaints at those individuals, You always have to write the state level or address it at govenors office.
