Summary

Burns Middle School is a public middle school in Mobile, Alabama, serving 692 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Mobile County School District, which is ranked 94 out of 135 districts in the state.

Burns Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Alabama middle schools over the past 10 years, with proficiency rates on state assessments significantly below the state and county averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 8-10% of Burns Middle School students were proficient in math, compared to 24-34% at the state level. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.8% to 31.5% over the past few years, which is much higher than the state and county averages.

In contrast, nearby Barton Academy For Advanced World Studies, ClarkShaw Magnet School, and Denton Magnet School of Technology consistently rank in the top 5-20% of Alabama middle schools and have significantly higher proficiency rates, particularly in math and science. This suggests that Burns Middle School may be underfunded compared to its higher-performing counterparts, as its per-student spending of $8,258 is lower than the nearby magnet schools, which spend between $7,903 and $11,174 per student.

Open Quote I feel the same way as the previous comment.. I had to contact the school board to get a phone call back from principl, meanwhile my child was being harrased by a teacher. My other child is doing horrible in math, makin 10 and 20 on test scores but nobody seems to think I need to be contacted nor can we get involved with after school tutering or the summer math program. I have had to stay up with her till 1 and 2 am trying to teach and catch her up to her grade level.. And yet again I can not get a phone call back. I am at the point where I am scared to send my children there daily knowing the school officials do not care for the wellbeing of my children. I would suggest to anybody to send your children to a school that actually cares if yoour child learns and also cares for their safety Close Quote

Open Quote Teacher has been noncommunitive about my child's progress in her class after several attempted communication on my part. She has harrased my child, and I think this no child left behind is a joke. This just something incorporated to help schools look better, because some of these teachers have been so long they no longer care or are concern with the success of the kids they are teaching.
