Summary

Denton Magnet School of Technology is a middle school in Mobile, AL, serving 334 students in grades 6-8 within the Mobile County school district.

Denton is a standout success story. The school has earned a 5-star rating for five consecutive years and currently ranks 23rd out of 443 Alabama middle schools—placing it in the top 5% statewide. This is a remarkable turnaround from just a decade ago, when it ranked near the bottom of the state. The academic numbers are striking: 8th graders score 84% proficiency in math (compared to 26% statewide), 87% in science, and 88% in English. The school's technology-focused curriculum appears to build skills progressively, with students showing significant growth from 6th to 8th grade. Perhaps most impressive is the school's equity: students from low-income backgrounds rank 6th in the state, and the school shows no significant achievement gaps across student groups. Chronic absenteeism is nearly nonexistent at just 0.8%, compared to 12% statewide—a strong sign of student engagement and a positive school climate.

Denton stands out even among its high-performing magnet peers. While Phillips Preparatory Middle School (ranked 10th) and ClarkShaw Magnet School (ranked 15th) also excel, Denton's 8th-grade math proficiency is nearly double theirs. What makes this even more notable is that Denton serves a student body where roughly half qualify for free/reduced lunch, while the area's top-ranked school, Barton Academy For Advanced World Studies, serves a much more affluent population. Denton proves that high achievement and economic diversity can go hand in hand, making it a model for educational excellence and equity in Alabama.

Open Quote Jeremiah Denton Middle School is possibly the WORST place I've ever observed. The bad children RUN the place, and it's not fun. I saw kids running around the room, hopping over desks, picking each other up, and taking food from a teacher's refrigerator and throwing it around the room! There is a high percentage of low-income children who may have learning disabilities. The teachers and staff did not appear adequately equipped to handle the kids! Close Quote
