Summary

Deerfield Elementary is a PK–6 school with 409 students in Deerfield, Wisconsin, a small Dane County community near Madison, and it is part of the Deerfield Community School District. For 2025–26 the school ranks 548th of 1,039 Wisconsin schools — 47th percentile, 2 stars — down from 399th of 1,044 (62nd percentile, 3 stars) the year before. The district itself ranks 279th of 432 districts.

The school's clearest strength is attendance. Chronic absenteeism fell to 5.8% in 2024–25, far below the district's 11.2% and the state's 17.3%, and second among nearby schools only to Lake Mills Elementary at 5.5%. It is also lower than McFarland Primary School (6.3%), Waubesa Intermediate (7.1%), Cambridge Elementary (8.1%), Cottage Grove Elementary (10.4%), Granite Ridge School (12.5%), Marshall Elementary (13.8%), and Elvehjem Elementary (18.8%). Class sizes are small — 11.7 students per teacher — and the school spends $13,751 per student, the lowest of any nearby school. Academically, Deerfield scored above the state in eight of ten grade/subject areas in 2025–26, including grades 4–6 in both reading and math.

Two areas need attention. Grade 3 is the weak spot: ELA proficiency was 39.39% versus 52.08% statewide, and math was 48.48% versus 54.75%. Results for students with disabilities and students from low-income families also dropped sharply, to the 26th and 15th percentiles (1 star each). Cambridge Elementary serves a similar share of low-income students yet ranks 4-star and 82nd percentile, and Lake Mills Elementary outperforms Deerfield as well — though Deerfield does better than Marshall Elementary, where poverty is much higher.

While every school has issues they work through from time to time, the issues in this school are limited. They are very focused on academics as well as the whole being of the student. I have a very bright child and am able to work with the teacher in adding to her curriculum to keep her interested in learning.

All the staff is pleasant and easy to get along with. There are few disagreements and have found everyone easy to work with and responsive to any concerns I have. Close Quote
