Summary

Chinook Elementary School is a K-5 public school serving 440 students in Vancouver, WA, that has earned a 4-star rating and consistently outperforms both its district and state averages in all core subjects.

Academically, Chinook is a standout in the Vancouver School District, with student proficiency rates notably higher than district and state averages, especially in mathematics. The school has shown impressive improvement, climbing to the 74th percentile statewide. It forms a high-performing cluster with nearby schools like Felida Elementary School and Salmon Creek Elementary, while significantly outperforming other district schools such as Hazel Dell Elementary School and Sarah J Anderson Elementary. Chinook also compares favorably to schools in neighboring districts, performing similarly to South Ridge Elementary in the higher-ranked Ridgefield School District.

While the school achieves strong results overall, there are areas to watch, including a notable drop in math proficiency in 5th grade and recent data showing challenges in supporting students from low-income families. With moderate per-student spending, Chinook demonstrates efficient use of resources compared to some schools with higher budgets, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg Elementary School. For families, Chinook represents a strong and steadily improving academic choice within the region.

Open Quote Children are forced to go out for recess when weather conditions are horrible. Today it was a record breaking cold day, with a severe wind/weather advisory. Children were complaining that they could not feel their fingers and that their hands and faces were hurting. Unfortunately this is not abnormal for Chinook elementary, and many other elementary schools in the area. This has been going on for years and parents and teachers are doing nothing to stop it! Unless people start standing up and fighting for their children, they are going to continue to do this. The staff assistants, who go outside for recess with the children, hear the children complaining about how their hands and face hurt yet they can't do anything to help them. Many children come to school without coats, hats, and gloves and are still allowed to go outside. Will it be frostbite, and the loss of a child's fingers that make this stop, or will they wait for our children to start dying? I urge you to email the principle and superintendents at your child's school to make this travesty stop! Close Quote
