Summary

South Whidbey Elementary is a K–5 school in Langley serving 485 students in the island community of the South Whidbey School District. The district is highly rated statewide, ranking 38th of 238 Washington districts, but the school itself is more middle-of-the-pack, ranking at the 51st percentile and receiving three stars for 2025–26. The school has made meaningful long-term progress, rising from the 24th percentile in 2014–15, although its ranking has slipped from a 59th-percentile peak in 2021–22.

Academic results vary considerably by subject. Science is the clearest strength: 67.47% of students were proficient, more than 16 percentage points above the state and higher than results at View Ridge Elementary, Jackson Elementary School, and Elger Bay Elementary. English Language Arts was weaker at 46.25%, below both the state and district averages. Math was nearly identical to the state average overall at 43.03%, but fourth-grade proficiency fell to 37.80% and fifth-grade proficiency was 39.76%. By comparison, nearby Mukilteo Elementary and Whittier Elementary posted much stronger results in all three subjects, while Elger Bay Elementary had a similar overall profile but weaker science performance.

For families, the main improvement priorities appear to be early-grade literacy, upper-elementary math, and support for students receiving special education services. That subgroup’s effectiveness ranking fell to the 7th percentile statewide, a substantial concern compared with the school’s overall ranking. The economically disadvantaged student population also increased to 39.18% in 2024–25, adding important context when comparing the school with lower-poverty neighbors. Reported spending was $18,499 per student, lower than every nearby comparison school with available data, while the 16.8-to-1 student-teacher ratio was close to the local average. Overall, the school offers a particularly strong science program, but recent gains have stalled and academic performance remains uneven.
