Summary

Hawthorne Elementary School is a public elementary school (PK-5) serving 446 students in the Everett School District, a generally high-performing district, but the school itself has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Washington state schools.

Academically, Hawthorne's proficiency rates are significantly below both district and state averages, with only about 30-34% of students meeting standards in core subjects like English, Math, and Science. This performance is notably lower than that of nearby schools in the same district, such as Whittier Elementary and Garfield Elementary School, which often have proficiency rates more than double Hawthorne's. The school serves a student population with very high economic need, with 84% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, which is the highest rate among all comparable local schools.

Despite having the highest per-student spending among nearby schools, these additional resources have not yet translated into improved academic outcomes relative to its peers. The school's state ranking has declined over the past decade, even as most surrounding schools have maintained or improved their standing. While the school shows varying effectiveness for different student groups, it continues to face significant challenges in bridging opportunity gaps for its high-need population within a district that otherwise performs well.

Open Quote Went to this school for grades 1 through 5 and enjoyed all 5 years I attended there. Keep in mind this was the early 90's, and at least back then the teachers were competent, likable, and I learned a lot during my years there.

I can't really say how the school is these days, things changed over time. Hopefully it has changed for the better. Close Quote
