Summary

South Whidbey High School in Langley, Washington, is a public grades 9–12 school serving about 390 students in the island community of the South Whidbey School District. It is a small high school with a strong overall academic record: the school ranked 35th of 396 Washington high schools, placing it in the 91st percentile and among the state’s top-performing schools. Its smaller size can support a more personal school environment, although it also means that individual graduating classes may cause noticeable year-to-year changes in test results.

Academic performance is well above Washington averages in every reported subject. In 2025–2026, 80.22% of students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared with 52.81% statewide; math proficiency was 57.14%, compared with 43.11%; and science proficiency was 63.01%, compared with 50.95%. ELA is the school’s clearest strength, while math is a relative weakness despite remaining above state and district results. The latest graduation rate was 96.0% in 2024–2025, far above the 82.6% state rate and nearly equal to the district’s 96.2%. The school also has exceptionally strong statewide rankings for students from lower-income backgrounds, although historical special education results suggest that updated support and achievement data would be useful to review.

Among nearby traditional high schools, Kamiak High School is the closest academic peer. Despite enrolling about 2,384 students, Kamiak’s current results are very similar: South Whidbey is slightly higher in ELA and science, while Kamiak is slightly higher in math. South Whidbey also has a lower student-teacher ratio, 17.6 to 1 versus Kamiak’s 24.6 to 1. Compared with the much larger Everett High School, South Whidbey leads substantially in all three subjects, especially math. Smaller alternative programs such as South Whidbey Academy serve different student populations and are not direct comparisons.
