Summary

Nooksack Valley High School is a public school serving about 520 students in grades 7–12 in Everson, a small Whatcom County community, and is part of the Nooksack Valley School District. The district ranks approximately in the 64th percentile statewide, while the school’s latest ranking is 154th out of 396 Washington schools, or about the 61st percentile, earning three stars. More than half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, so the school serves a relatively high-need population compared with nearby traditional high schools. Despite that context, its 91.1% graduation rate in 2024–25 was well above the 82.6% statewide rate and higher than the rates reported for Squalicum High School, Ferndale High School, Meridian High School, Lynden High School, and Mount Baker Senior High.

English language arts is the school’s clearest academic strength. In 2025–26, 62.99% of students were proficient, compared with 52.81% statewide and 50.24% in the district. The result has exceeded the state in every reported year since 2022–23, although several nearby schools—including Lynden High School, Meridian High School, and Squalicum High School—currently post higher rates. Mathematics is more mixed: proficiency rose from 36.84% to 42.52%, but remains slightly below the state and district. Encouragingly, the school’s 10th-grade math result was above the statewide 10th-grade rate.

Science is the most important current concern. Proficiency fell sharply from 55.83% in 2024–25 to 40.22% in 2025–26, below the state, district, and every nearby traditional school with a reported result. The school’s overall ranking has also declined from its 2017–18 peak in the top 10% statewide, although its strong graduation outcomes remain a major asset. Subgroup results suggest particularly effective support for low-income students, English learners in the years reported, and homeless students; the low-income subgroup ranked around the 70th percentile most recently. Parents may want to ask about plans for science improvement, math consistency, and differences in outcomes for male and Hispanic students. Overall, the school appears solid and graduation-focused, with strong ELA performance and meaningful areas for targeted improvement.
