Summary:

Bellingham School District includes 25 schools serving students from elementary through high school, along with alternative and re-engagement programs, in the Bellingham area. The district serves approximately 10,000 students. Its schools vary considerably in size and performance, with the largest campuses including Squalicum High School, Bellingham High School, Sehome High School, Whatcom Middle School, and Shuksan Middle School.

Several schools stand out for strong achievement or improvement. Bellingham High School has the district’s highest current SchoolDigger ranking and strong ELA performance, while Sehome High School has the highest graduation rate and strongest high-school science results. Squalicum High School has made one of the largest ranking gains and combines high graduation with a low dropout rate. Among middle schools, Kulshan Middle School leads in ranking, ELA, and math, while Fairhaven Middle School is especially strong in science. Top elementary results come from Columbia Elementary School, Silver Beach Elementary School, Wade King Elementary School, and Lowell Elementary School.

Parents should also be aware of substantial differences among schools. Cordata Elementary School, Alderwood Elementary School, and Birchwood Elementary School have the lowest current elementary proficiency rates, while Shuksan Middle School needs particular attention in math. High-school ELA is generally strong, but math is a districtwide challenge, especially at Options High School. Alternative programs such as Bellingham Family Partnership Program, Bellingham Re-Engagement Program, and Visions (Seamar Youth Center) serve specialized populations, so their results are not directly comparable with traditional schools. Overall, the district offers several high-performing options, but elementary achievement gaps and high-school math remain the most important concerns.
