Summary

Parkside Elementary is a public elementary school serving about 535 students from preschool through 5th grade in Des Moines, Washington, as part of the Highline School District.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with student proficiency in reading, math, and science well below both district and state averages; it currently ranks in the bottom 5% of all Washington elementary schools, which is a notable decline from its performance a decade ago. The school serves a community with high economic need, and while it spends over $20,800 per student, it has a higher student-to-teacher ratio than some nearby schools like Des Moines Elementary in the same district, which spends more per pupil, has a lower ratio, and achieves stronger academic results.

Comparisons with other local schools show that improvement is possible even in similar circumstances; for instance, Star Lake Elementary in the Federal Way School District serves a student population with similar needs but achieves notably higher test scores. This suggests that school-level leadership, teaching practices, and how resources are used can make a substantial difference in student outcomes.

Open Quote This school has a high rate of bullying, discrimination and prejudice. The principal needs to get her behind out of the ground and start listening to the students when they say they have problems. She hears what she wants to heay and that is all. She also takes students into her office, supposedly fordiscipline and lectures. Is it legal for her to do this behind a closed door with no one alse in the room? This is highly WRONG! When it rains students are forced to go outside forrecess, even disabled kids in wheelchairs. I am seriously considering reporting her to the School District. I wonder if it would do any good. I definitely do NOT recommend this school to anybody. Close Quote
