Summary

Midway Elementary is a PK–5 school in Des Moines serving 548 students in the Highline School District, in an area where many families may need additional school and community support. In 2024–25, 78.1% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. The school had 17.8 students per teacher, one of the highest ratios among nearby comparison schools, and spent about $20,000 per student in 2023–24.

Academic results are the main concern. In 2025–26, 13.36% of students were proficient in English language arts, 13.97% in math, and 17.57% in science. These results were below both the district and Washington averages, and the school ranked in the 3rd percentile statewide. Midway Elementary was the lowest-performing school in the comparison group in all three subjects. Its results were especially far behind nearby North Hill Elementary and Marvista Elementary, which each exceeded 60% proficiency in ELA and science. The school’s four-year pattern also shows no sustained improvement: ELA declined, math remained near 14%, and science showed only a small recent recovery.

The challenges affect multiple grades and subjects rather than pointing to one isolated weakness. Third- and fourth-grade ELA proficiency was about 10%, fourth-grade math was 9.21%, and fifth-grade science was 17.57%. Parkside Elementary and Madrona Elementary serve similarly high-need populations but posted stronger results, while Des Moines Elementary also performed considerably better. Families may want to ask about plans for early literacy, fourth-grade math, fifth-grade science, staffing, support for English learners, and whether effective practices from stronger nearby schools can be adapted at Midway Elementary.
