Summary

Sunnycrest Elementary School is a public PK-5 school serving 535 students in Kent, Washington, operating within the Federal Way School District in a high-need community where over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Sunnycrest has consistently ranked in the very bottom tier of Washington elementary schools for nearly a decade, placing in the 5th percentile statewide, with test scores in English, math, and science significantly below district and state averages. While the school's per-student spending is similar to other Federal Way schools like Mark Twain Elementary School, it is notably lower than higher-performing nearby schools in other districts, such as Neely O Brien Elementary School in the Kent School District. Despite having a relatively favorable student-teacher ratio, these resources have not translated into stronger academic outcomes.

Sunnycrest is part of a local cluster of schools facing similar challenges, yet some, like Star Lake Elementary School in the same district, achieve better results with similar demographics, indicating that school-level practices matter. A notable bright spot is a recent improvement in English scores, and the school's 5th-grade math performance has matched the district average, suggesting potential strengths in upper-grade instruction. The school maintains stable enrollment, and a key question for the community is understanding why its outcomes lag behind nearby schools with comparable student populations and resources.

Open Quote My son unfortunately goes to this school, and it's the primary reason we're in the process of putting our house on the market and moving to a better school district. The Zero out of 5 star ranking seems about right, and the falling rankings the last 4 years seems accurate. From 698th out of 1004 Elementary schools in 2010, to recently 982 out of 1023, it's pitiful.

I understand the school faces a lot of challenges due to the low economic status of a lot of its students, and the high amount of students where English is a second language. They actually do announcements over the intercoms in Spanish.

My son is bored in class, he finishes his weeks’ worth of homework in one night, he's not being challenged or excited in anyway.

Unfortunately I feel this school is only going to get worse, if that's even possible. Hopefully we can get Sunnycrest and the Federal Way SD in our rear view mirror very soon. Close Quote

Open Quote Sunnycrest has added dual language to their educational options. They use both accelerated reader and Fountas & Pinnell reading scales to asses and elevate the learning experience of the student. The staff and leadership at the school put the children's education and well being first. Close Quote
