Summary

Chinook Middle School is a SeaTac, Washington, school serving 620 students in grades 6–8 within the Highline School District, an urban-area district with a relatively high-need student population.

Chinook’s latest statewide ranking places it 463rd out of 514 Washington middle schools, at the 10th percentile. In 2025–26, 29.44% of students were proficient in English language arts, 15.67% in math, and 33.33% in science. Math is the school’s clearest challenge: proficiency has remained near 15%–17% over the past four years and is well below both district and state results. Science is a relative strength and has improved for three consecutive years, slightly exceeding the district average. Chinook also has a comparatively favorable student-teacher ratio of 17.3, the lowest among the nearby schools reviewed, although the available data do not explain why achievement remains low.

Performance varies by grade and comparison school. Eighth grade is Chinook’s strongest level, exceeding district averages in ELA, math, and science, while sixth- and seventh-grade math results are especially weak. Chinook is close to Pacific Middle School in ELA and math and performs better than Glacier Middle School in all three subjects. Its science results also exceed those at several nearby schools, including Evergreen Middle School, Mill Creek Middle School, and Showalter Middle School. However, it trails the stronger Sylvester Middle School by substantial margins. The most promising improvement opportunities are to apply effective eighth-grade and science practices to earlier grades, strengthen math support, and study how Sylvester achieves stronger results within the same district.
