Summary

Covington Middle School is a Vancouver, Washington, school serving about 830 students in grades 6–8 within the Evergreen School District (Clark). It is one of the larger middle schools in the area, with a 17.7 student-teacher ratio and 58.07% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academic performance is currently below district and state averages, although the school is moving in a positive direction. For 2025–26, 29.49% of students were proficient in English language arts, 21.37% in math, and 29.84% in science. Math is the biggest concern, particularly in seventh grade, where proficiency was 19.28%. Still, all three subjects improved from the previous year, and English and math have made notable gains since 2022–23. Covington’s statewide ranking also improved from the 4th percentile in 2022–23 to the 13th percentile in 2025–26. The results suggest a schoolwide challenge rather than a problem limited to one grade or subject.

Among nearby Evergreen schools, Covington ranks below Shahala Middle School, Pacific Middle School, Frontier Middle School, and Wyeast Middle School, but above Cascade Middle School. It performs better than nearby Discovery Middle School, McLoughlin Middle School, and Gaiser Middle School in the tested subjects. Laurin Middle School may be a useful comparison because it serves a similarly situated student population but has stronger results. Covington’s favorable staffing ratio and relatively high $17,233 per-student spending are positives, while the key priorities appear to be sustained schoolwide instruction and intensive math support.
