Summary

Carter Lake Elementary School is a PK–5 school serving about 420 students in the military-connected community of Joint Base Lewis-McChord and is part of the Clover Park School District. The school ranks near the middle of Washington elementary schools overall, at the 50th percentile with a three-star rating, but it is one of the stronger schools in its local area. Its 46.67% free- or reduced-price lunch rate is lower than that of most nearby comparison schools, providing useful context when comparing results.

Academically, Carter Lake stands out most for math. In 2025–26, 51.74% of students were proficient in English language arts, 44.78% in math, and 41.38% in science. These results exceeded the district in all three subjects, with math nearly 16 percentage points higher than the district rate and slightly above the Washington state average. Carter Lake led every nearby comparison school except Beachwood Elementary School in ELA and math. Its math performance was also higher than that of Park Lodge Elementary School, by 24.67 percentage points. Beachwood remains the clearest local benchmark, however, with substantially higher results in all three subjects.

Parents may want to watch the school’s grade-level and multi-year trends. Math proficiency was strongest in third grade at 54.67% but fell to 37.29% in fifth grade, while fourth-grade ELA was another weaker area. Science has declined sharply, from 66.18% in 2022–23 to 41.38% in 2025–26, making it the school’s most important academic improvement priority. Carter Lake appears especially effective with economically disadvantaged students, whose subgroup effectiveness ranked at the 88th percentile. By contrast, special education students ranked at the 14th percentile, and military-connected students at the 11th percentile—an important concern for a school serving a highly mobile military community. Overall, Carter Lake is a solid local performer with strong relative math results, but it has room to regain earlier achievement levels and strengthen support for students needing specialized or transition-related services.
