Summary

Park Lodge Elementary School is a public elementary school (PK-5) serving 363 students in Lakewood, Washington, as part of the Clover Park School District, and it has been consistently ranked among the lowest-performing schools in the state.

Academically, student proficiency is significantly below both district and state averages, with only 28% proficient in English, 19% in Math, and 21% in Science. This is particularly striking because Park Lodge Elementary School has more resources than nearby schools, spending the most per student and having the smallest class sizes, yet it has the worst outcomes. For example, Custer Elementary School, another school in the same district less than two miles away, spends slightly less per student, has larger classes, but achieves dramatically better results, ranking in the 45th percentile statewide compared to Park Lodge's 4th percentile.

While the entire Clover Park School District faces challenges, the analysis shows that Park Lodge's severe and persistent underperformance, especially in math and for certain student groups, suggests issues beyond funding or poverty levels. The school's performance has declined sharply over the past decade, indicating a need for fundamental changes in instructional strategies or leadership to better utilize its considerable resources and improve student learning.

Open Quote The school receives extra funding. The teachers work extra hard. All students get free meals. None of that seems to help. The pivot during COVID has been excruciating with a seemingly thrown-together disorganized way to approaching remote learning. Each teacher has different tools, methods of communication, expectations, ZERO standardization, very little consistency. Almost no communication of progress or need for correction except during conferences 3 x annually. Lots of attention to underperformers, disengaged parents. The school hosts really fun events (even virtually during COVID) and provides supplies for family/school engagement activities but a painfully low number of families participate. This is a sadly bad school, not for lack of effort, but for lack of effective strategies. The COVID learning resource package has been awful and difficult to support as an actively engaged parent let alone for a disengaged, low participation parent. The framework has built-in the need to rely on teachers which holds successful students/family back for the sake of "Equity". Close Quote

Open Quote Considering the population demographics and the lack of willing volunteers, the staff and educators at Park Lodge have worked very hard to make Park Lodge a great school. If there are problems, it is the lack of parent involvement that brings this school down. Close Quote
