Summary

West Hills S.T.E.M. Academy is a small PK–5 elementary school in Bremerton, serving 283 students at 520 S National Ave. The school is part of the Bremerton School District and serves a relatively high-need community: 70.67% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25. West Hills ranked at the 25th percentile statewide for 2025–26, an improvement from 8th percentile in 2021–22 and its strongest result in the five-year period. Recent academic results show improvement, but performance remains below Washington averages. In 2025–26, 36.84% of students were proficient in English language arts, 32.06% in math, and 38.10% in science. Math is the school’s relative strength because it exceeded the district rate by 4.51 percentage points, while ELA was slightly below the district and science was nearly identical. West Hills compares favorably with Armin Jahr Elementary in all three subjects and with Naval Avenue Elementary School in ELA and math. However, it trails stronger nearby schools such as Kitsap Lake Elementary and Crownhill Elementary School.

Grade-level results point to the clearest area for improvement: third grade. ELA proficiency was 21.43% and math proficiency was 29.27%, well below district results. By contrast, fifth-grade ELA reached 50%, above the district rate and relatively close to the state rate, suggesting that students can make meaningful progress by the end of elementary school. Science performance has improved from some earlier years but does not yet give the school a distinctive STEM advantage. Overall, West Hills appears to be an improving school with promising recent gains, especially in math and subgroup results, while needing sustained attention to early literacy, foundational math, and consistency across grades.

I believe the low scores and ratings showing on this site are based on older information, as my personal experience with the school, the teachers and the students has been uniformly excellent.
