Summary:

Washougal School District serves the Washougal area in southwest Washington through eight schools: four elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and one alternative school. The district enrolls about 2,651 students and ranks in the upper third of Washington districts, at the 66th percentile. Overall, the district offers a mixed but generally favorable academic picture, with particularly strong middle-school science results and a graduation rate above the state average.

Jemtegaard Middle School is the district’s strongest overall school, ranking in the 80th percentile and outperforming the district in English language arts, math, and science. Canyon Creek Middle School has the district’s best science performance, with 75% of students proficient, although its seventh-grade English results are notably weaker. Among elementary schools, Hathaway Elementary has the strongest overall math and science results, despite serving the largest share of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Gause Elementary has shown the biggest recent ranking improvement, while Washougal High School has the district’s strongest English results and an 86.7% graduation rate.

The main areas for improvement are elementary English language arts, high-school math, and uneven performance between grades. Washougal High School’s math proficiency is substantially below district and state levels, despite improvement from the prior year. Elementary English results average about 42%, while science is considerably stronger. Parents may also want to note recent declines at Hathaway Elementary and Cape Horn Skye Elementary. Washougal Learning Academy serves only 13 students, so its percentages and suppressed grade-level results should be interpreted cautiously and not compared directly with larger schools.
