Summary

Quioccasin Middle is a Henrico County Public School in Richmond, VA, serving 1,053 students in grades 6–8, and it now ranks in the 10th percentile of Virginia middle schools—a dramatic decline from its 51st percentile ranking just a decade ago.

The defining feature of Quioccasin is a sharp split between advanced coursework and grade-level classes. On-grade-level math proficiency is critically low: just 27.65% of 6th graders, 27.35% of 7th graders, and 20.74% of 8th graders are proficient, compared to state averages of 63.19%, 51.11%, and 46.86% respectively. Reading is somewhat stronger, with 55–62% proficiency across grades, but still trails district and state averages. Yet in advanced courses, results are outstanding: 100% of 7th-grade Algebra I students are proficient, along with 97.56% of 8th-grade Algebra I students and 92.5% of Geometry students. Earth Science proficiency (91.67%) is also above state averages. Poverty alone does not explain the results. Quioccasin has roughly 90% free/reduced-price lunch eligibility, but nearby schools with similar poverty rates perform dramatically better. Tuckahoe Middle ranks in the 40th percentile with 77.75% 6th-grade reading proficiency (vs. Quioccasin's 55.72%), and Hungary Creek Middle ranks in the 47th percentile with 57.69% 6th-grade math proficiency (vs. 27.65%). Chronic absenteeism at 15.4% is roughly double that of Short Pump Middle (7.7%) and Pocahontas Middle (6.6%). Per-pupil spending ($9,361) is actually higher than some higher-performing nearby schools, suggesting resources alone don't explain the gap. Nearly every student subgroup measured ranks in the bottom 18th percentile or lower statewide, underscoring that this is a schoolwide challenge.

I have a 10th grader who attended QMS and a 7th grader currently attending. Both of my kids have had overall positive experiences there. Middle school is very much what you make it. There will be some teachers your kid will like better than others, but I think its beneficial for them to adapt to different teaching styles. There are many clubs and extracurriculars that your child(ren) can join and participate in. There are always opportunities for parents to get involved and help our school be the best it can be. Favoritism at its best ! Also, what kind of teacher gives a packet for kids to do over the summer of 5 continents and their capitals and such!??!
Then threatens a test 2 weeks after school starts? Way to stress the child and parent out and make summer non enjoyable. I will be reporting to the superintendent as summer is NOT for school work this intense. Close Quote

I have had kids at this school for 4 years and will be there for several more. I have had a very good experience. The teachers are dedicated and supportive, the principals and counselors know all the kids well and work to give them what they need to succeed. The school has classes for advanced and gifted, ESL, and regular ed, with built in collaborative classes as well as self-contained classrooms for those that need it. The diversity is amazing. My child has friends from multiple countries, religions and ethnicities. The school accomodates for fasting children during Ramadan and has kosher options for kids that require it. Other schools might have higher testing ranks, but I feel that the diversity is something that all schools should be so lucky to have. Close Quote
