Summary

Brookland Middle is a large middle school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 1,034 students in grades 6–8 as part of Henrico County Public Schools, and it currently holds the 3rd percentile ranking among Virginia middle schools (402nd out of 416) with a 0-star rating. This is not a recent decline — the school has ranked in the bottom 1–8 percent statewide in every available year over the past decade and has never earned more than 0 stars. Approximately 90% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and chronic absenteeism runs at 21.6%, well above the district rate of 14.1% and the state rate of 14.8%.

Academic proficiency at Brookland lags far behind state averages across every tested subject. Grade-level math proficiency ranges from 23.4% in 8th grade to 36.3% in 6th grade, compared to state averages of 46.9% to 63.2%. Reading proficiency sits at roughly 47–53%, about 20–25 points below the state. Science proficiency is similarly low at 34.8%. One notable bright spot: students in advanced math courses perform very well — Algebra I proficiency is 85.2% for 7th graders and 80.0% for 8th graders, while Geometry reaches 90.0%. This suggests the accelerated pathway is working for a subset of students, but the majority in standard grade-level math are being left behind. Every subgroup at Brookland ranks in the bottom 1–13% statewide, indicating the challenge is school-wide.

Comparisons to nearby schools show that Brookland's trajectory is not inevitable. Tuckahoe Middle and Hungary Creek Middle — both in Henrico County with nearly identical poverty rates around 90% — rank in the 40th and 47th percentiles respectively, and outperform Brookland by 25–30 percentage points in reading. They also have roughly half the chronic absenteeism. Quioccasin Middle and L. Douglas Wilder Middle, closer peers in Henrico, also outperform Brookland despite similar student populations. Even George H. Moody Middle, less than two miles away, ranks in the 58th percentile with reading proficiency in the 80s. What stands out most is attendance: Brookland's chronic absenteeism is the highest in this set of neighboring schools. Given that similar-poverty schools with better attendance achieve far stronger results, improving attendance is likely the single most concrete strategy for meaningful change.

Open Quote Love Brookland Middle School. The teachers are dedicated and the administrators are committed to keeping students safe. This is not considered the best school in the county due to high poverty and transient families, but I know my child would not get a better education at any other school. Sometimes you need to see things with your own eyes. Close Quote
