Summary

George H. Moody Middle is a large public middle school in Richmond, VA, serving about 1,086 students in grades 6–8 within the Henrico County Public Schools district. While the district overall ranks in the bottom third of Virginia school districts, Moody is a solid mid-range school—ranking 173rd of 416 Virginia middle schools (58th percentile) with 3 stars. It is the strongest Henrico middle school in its area, far outpacing nearby Hungary Creek Middle, Tuckahoe Middle, L. Douglas Wilder Middle, Quioccasin Middle, and Brookland Middle, which all rank in the bottom half statewide. Only Chickahominy Middle in neighboring Hanover County Public Schools does better.

Reading is Moody's signature strength, with 80–84% of students in every grade proficient in English reading—about 7–11 points above the state average. Attendance is strong, too: just 10.5% of students are chronically absent versus 14.1% districtwide and 14.8% statewide. Advanced courses are outstanding as well, with 97–99% proficiency in Geometry, Earth Science, and Algebra I, demonstrating the school's success at accelerating strong students. Moody also serves a more economically diverse population than its neighbors—36.3% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch versus roughly 90% at nearby Henrico middle schools.

Moody struggles, however, with grade-level math and science. Only 37.8% of 6th graders, 47.7% of 7th graders, and 37.0% of 8th graders are proficient in math—well below state averages—and 8th-grade science proficiency is just 28.0% versus 64.7% statewide. Achievement gaps among student groups are also pronounced. Despite spending less per student ($8,810) than any neighboring middle school, Moody outperforms nearly all of them. The contrast with Chickahominy Middle—a 97th-percentile school with 80–90% proficiency across all subjects—highlights both how impressive Moody's reading results are and how much room for growth remains in math and science.
